Good Human Resource Managers Focus on Training and Development

As a human resource manager, you know the importance of finding qualified candidates for the job. You know how long this process can take. You may also realize that your job is dependent on your ability to find the right people for the right positions. However, if you are not focusing at least a portion of your daily tasks on training and development, you are likely missing the success you could have. Training and development are key components to a successful hire and on-the-job success.

Hiring with Promise

One of the first things to consider with this regard is how well a person is able to learn something new. The way your business operates is going to be different from the way another one in the same industry does. As a human resource manager, you may think that the job applicant with history working for your competitor is a great fit. However, this person cannot do a good job if you do not offer him in-house training and development. Hire someone that has the potential to do well because of his or her ability to be trained, not just because of their past work experience.

Implement a Training Program

Even if you are not hiring right now, you can still focus on training and development within your organization and you should be doing so. Do you have an effective training program in place? This program allows every employee you have to learn and develop new skills. It may include learning management-type positions. It may include training on other areas of the floor the employee does not know how to do yet. It may include giving the team the ability to improve their current skills so they can boost productivity or reduce safety risks. Individualized or group-led, you need a training program in place.

Make It Ongoing

Human resource managers need to train their managers and upper level professionals to make training and development an ongoing process. If a manager sees an employee do something improperly or inefficiently, it is corrected on the spot. From new hires to the people who have been there for years, having this type of constant training frame of mind is critical to developing a strong business.

Training and development offers various benefits to the company as a whole. It encourages development from within rather than hiring from outside the business. It reduces safety risks. It increases productivity. It may even satisfy customers more thoroughly. Good human resource managers focus on improving and designing training programs that meet these goals.
